Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

Published on Aug 23, 2012 by
Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. According to Bill Nye, aka "The Science Guy," if grownups want to "deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them."

Transcript--
Denial of evolution is unique to the United States.  I mean, we're the world's most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens.  People still move to the United States.  And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science.  When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology.  It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates.  You're just not going to get the right answer.  Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.

As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, "When you're in love you want to tell the world."  So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don't believe in evolution.  And my response generally is "Well, why not? Really, why not?"  Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution.  I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their lifecycle.  The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us.  If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.

And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them.  We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future.  We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

It's just really hard a thing, it's really a hard thing.  You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist.  There's no evidence for it.

Fake Celebrity Pranks New York City

Published on Aug 21, 2012 by
On the night of July 27th, 2012, a huge prank was pulled in New York City and this is the video of what took place. Brett Cohen came up with a crazy idea to fool thousands of pedestrians walking the streets of Times Square into thinking he was a huge celebrity, and it worked! Not only did it work, it caused quite a stir. This social experiment, of sorts, makes a profound statement about how modern culture is so attracted to pop culture, without any real credibility needed.

He dressed up like a typical celebrity and was accompanied by an entourage of two professional bodyguards, two assistants, and photographers pretending to be paparazzi. While the assistants and photographers waited for Brett to exit the 49th street marquee at NBC Studios, they started a buzz that a "big star" was about to walk out, thus making it worth their while to wait and get a picture. Many asked the crew whom Brett was, and no answer was given. They were forced to either make something up, or just take a picture with him in hopes that their Facebook friends or Twitter followers might have a better idea.

As the crew walked over to Times Square, the crowds around Brett grew on each consecutive block. Very few people even questioned who he was, where he was from, or what he does. Brett took pictures with nearly 300 people before the stunt ended. The video even includes interviews with people who had just taken a picture with Brett, and puts them in an awkward position when they're asked questions such as, "Where do you know Brett from?" and "What's your favorite movie he was in?" Many of them were overwhelmingly excited over Brett's walk through Times Square, and it showed.

Dream Music: Part 2

Dream Music: Part II is a musical voyage into the depths of the subconscious. This lyrical narrative reflects on the perception of time within dreams and waking life. Filmed on location in 2 states over the course of 6 months, we explored our new production technique of what we call 'lyric-lapsing', to achieve the surrealistic feeling of movement. We built upon the foundation of Part 1 with ambitious ideas that usually took around 6-8 hours of work for 3-4 seconds of footage. Our goal was to pioneer a new film genre by telling a story through art and music. Part 2 was made to transport the viewer from their own reality into a world of dreams and at the end, they awake to wonder how we were able to take them there. Each scene was born from the symbolic meaning of the lyrics and overall message of the film; Time is the illusion within the dream of life.

Dash Cam shows Pensacola Police Office slamming girl into car? He was later fired and arrested

Published on Aug 18, 2012 by
A Pensacola police K-9 officer was fired and arrested Friday after an investigation stemming from a police video that showed him slamming a woman whom he was arresting into the side of her car.

Christopher Geraci, 33, who had been with the department since March 2004, was seen grabbing the suspect in a hit-and-run by her left arm and strongly bashing her into the side of the car, then grabbing her hair and pushing her bodily into the car.

The woman, Abbi Bonds, 29, offered virtually no resistance.

She did not file a complaint against the officer and was not seriously injured. Rather, the violent encounter, caught on the dashboard camera of Geraci's squad car, was discovered during a routi
